Grand Canyon National Park: South Rim Road Trip Guide

The South Rim is the most accessible and most visited part of the Grand Canyon, open year-round with easy road access from Flagstaff and Williams, Arizona.

How Much Time to Budget

One full day covers the main viewpoints along Hermit Road and Desert View Drive. Add a second day if you want to hike below the rim.

Don’t Miss

  • Mather Point and Yavapai Point for classic overlooks near the visitor center
  • Hermit Road viewpoints, accessible by free shuttle most of the year
  • Desert View Watchtower at the eastern end of the drive
  • South Kaibab Trail to Ooh Aah Point for a short below-rim hike

A Note on Hiking Down

The canyon’s biggest hazard isn’t the descent, it’s the climb back out in heat. Rangers strongly discourage hiking rim-to-river-to-rim in a single day, especially in summer. Treat any below-rim hike as an out-and-back with a firm turnaround time.

Best Time to Visit

The South Rim is open all year. Spring and fall offer comfortable rim temperatures; summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms.
