Yosemite National Park: A First-Timer’s Guide
Yosemite Valley’s granite walls and waterfalls make it one of the most photographed landscapes in the country, but the park extends far beyond the valley floor into high country most visitors never see.
How Much Time to Budget
Two to three days lets you see Yosemite Valley plus at least one high-country area like Glacier Point or Tuolumne Meadows.
A Key Timing Note
Tioga Road, the route across the high country to Tuolumne Meadows, is typically closed by snow from around November through late spring or early summer. Check current conditions before planning a trip that relies on it.
Don’t Miss
- Tunnel View, the classic postcard overlook of the valley
- Yosemite Falls, especially in spring when snowmelt peaks
- Glacier Point for a sweeping view over the valley and Half Dome
- Mariposa Grove to see giant sequoias
Getting Around
Valley traffic and parking fill up fast in summer. The free shuttle system inside Yosemite Valley is often faster than driving and parking yourself.
