Zion National Park: Planning Your Visit
Zion packs towering sandstone cliffs into a compact canyon in southwest Utah, making it one of the most rewarding parks for travelers on a tight schedule.
How Much Time to Budget
Two full days covers the highlights. One day is enough if you’re just passing through, but you’ll have to pick between the main canyon hikes.
Getting Around
Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles for most of the year; a free park shuttle runs instead. Plan to arrive early or use the shuttle from the town of Springdale to avoid parking headaches.
Don’t Miss
- Angels Landing (permit required for the chain section)
- The Narrows, wading up the Virgin River between canyon walls
- Emerald Pools Trail for an easier family-friendly hike
- Canyon Overlook Trail near the east entrance for a short, big-payoff view
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall bring the best combination of mild temperatures and manageable crowds. Summer is hot in the canyon and the busiest season overall.
